Is Your Diet a-Workin' or is Your Diet Hardly a-Workin'?

From Potato Chip Kicker to Glass Blower,
we'll show you how to hit Diet Pay Dirt. Pay off is swell....

This morning, I watched in awe as a doctor on television spoke to an audience filled with overweight seniors and severely obese individuals as he instructed them how to lose weight. Although I assume that the thin doctor is exceptionally bright when it comes to book-smarts, it would have been easier for the audience to round-up a herd of wild bucking bulls than follow his extensive advice.

In a capsule, the advice included a plethora of exercise, as well as severely cutting calories - including counting every morsel that passed through one's lips - to which shortly, I switched off the tube. I sat there thinking amid the silence, "No one gets it, do they? Not even many supposedly-brilliant doctors. No one appears to be in sync with what overweight individuals are battling in their effort to ditch those unwanted pounds."

Fact is, the number of overweight individuals in the world is increasing - not decreasing, yet for the most part it's the same old advice when it comes to dropping excess weight. What is needed is a new tactic - a new strategy to win the obesity battle. It's something that we strive to do at Diet Bites day in, and day out - to provide original, interesting weight loss tips that will shake up good results, whether it's health-related or weight-related results. If weight loss tips, menus, recipes and advice isn't doable in the common individual's daily routine, then it's just not going to work over the long-term.

Sure, an individual can take this good doctor's advice and exercise their little brains out - if humanly and physically able. They can count every morsel of food they eat as he recommended - and tally up the calories on their portable mini-abacus. And in doing such, the odds are extremely high that this approach to weight loss will fall to the wayside very quickly - like a roman candle. This approach to weight loss is just not fun. It's just not real. It's just not a good pairing with everyday life. It's just not doable over the long-term for most individuals seeking permanent weight loss results.

And for the overweight individual when trying such advice, the stress related to being overweight shifts to the stress of being able to perform strenuous exercise while watching every dot of food they eat. It's overwhelming. It's overpowering. It's consuming. It's controlling. It's just not doable.

So what does work when it comes to weight loss success?

So as not to sound too derogative towards 'diet-oriented' doctors and health professionals, recommending a reduced calorie diet along with an exercise plan is paramount to achieving weight loss success. However, in order for the advice to work, it must be doable. Running until one's tongue is hanging out only to feast on a plate of parsley and boiled carrots just isn't going to work when it comes to defeating obesity.

- It's better to have an activity goal of walking a couple of times per week at 15-minute intervals and sticking with it rather than attempting to exercise 30 minutes per day, then discarding the routine after a couple of days, weeks or even months. Most individuals can't run like spotted apes at 30 minute intervals.

- It's better to cut back to single-servings at meal time and to switch to fruits for snacks than it is to go on a calorie-restrictive diet where one is continually adding up calories, only to discard the diet shortly after it begins.

When gazing into our Diet History, these modern-day recommendations for weight loss can be mind-boggling. I daresay our Great, Great, Great Grandfather Eli set aside 30 minutes to one hour per day to perform aerobic exercise much less embraced some of the hideous, untasty Diet Food concoctions created in today's world. In the good old days, most of our ancestors got in plenty of daily activity and had no need of dieting.

But somewhere along the way, exercise routines were developed - windmills to wind off pounds, sit-ups to flatten the tummy, leg lifts to trim the thighs and butt lifts to achieve a hole in one when it comes to weight loss results. And rarely do these new-fangled exercises work to achieve long-term weight loss success.

How can you make your diet and exercise routine doable to achieve weight loss success?

Weight loss is a day-to-day process that must be approached with this in mind: "I must alter my current daily diet and activity level to achieve permanent weight loss." Little things add up to big results when it comes to weight loss, such as in opting for great-tasting foods that are good for you. Here are just a few examples of little changes with big rewards:

star02_lightblue.gif Become a Potato Chip Kicker - Grabbing onto a banana rather than a few handfuls of chips from a bag saves mega calories and fat. Three handfuls of potato chips contain about 300 calories (about 100 per hand - of course, size of hand plays a role) whereas one big banana hovers in at around 100 calories.

star02_lightblue.gif Become a Glass Blower - Juices, although originating from a healthy base, contain a plethora of calories. Rather than one cup of grape juice which can hold 160 calories or more, opt for a cup of grapes and cut calories by 2/3'rds. Or, enjoy juices in moderation.

star02_lightblue.gif Kick the Can - Sodas and beers, including lite/light beers, are hefty in calories BUT it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy your suds. Reach for a can of diet rootbeer or diet cream soda instead.

star02_lightblue.gif Cut the Cheese - Cheese is like sugar, salt and fat, very tasty and very addictive. But the last time that I looked, cheese is still considered a dairy product by the good old USDA - so yes, it's a great food even for dieters. Although 6 ounces of shredded cheese loaded inside your favorite cheese enchilada isn't going to cut the cheese when it comes to weight loss, opting for lighter versions of cheese can when enjoyed in moderation. If you're a cheese lover, try opting for Kraft Mozzarella sliced cheese at 60 calories per slice.

star02_lightblue.gif Desserts Spelled Backwards is Stressed - In order to achieve weight loss, it doesn't mean that you have to dig a giant hole and bury all your favorite foods while singing a teary-eyed version of "Goodbye My Love". And this includes favorite desserts. The key is to identify the desserts that you find most charming and become aware of the number of calories contained therein so that you can adjust your diet to fit in these favorites when the time arrives.

star02_lightblue.gif Dodge the Doughwad - Bread has been going out of the bread baskets and into the trash basket in droves these days due to the popularity of carb diets. Whole grains are important part of the daily diet until they are drowned in butter, jam, cream cheese and cheese. However, a dab of butter, a dab of jam, a dab of cream cheese and a slice of skim mozzarella cheese make mighty-tasty, mighty-friendly-to-the-dieter additions to bread and can fit well into a healthy daily diet.

star02_lightblue.gif The Fat Vat - Fried foods take a toll on the daily diet in the form of - you guessed it, FAT. Fat is ultra high in calories, not to mention what it can do to a perfectly good artery. However, enjoying those favorite fried foods every now and then isn't as likely to kill your diet as when fried foods are banned from the diet. Yes, it's true - no matter what you've been led to believe. When a dieter is able to incorporate familiar foods into their daily diet, they are more apt to achieve weight loss success. It's all about moderation and making wise, healthy choices.

In Summary

If your weight loss menu isn't doable every dang day, it's just not going to work over the long-term. If you're one of the lucky ones who manages to lose to goal weight, if you don't have a strategy in place for managing weight on a daily basis, that unwanted weight is likely to return.

Put aside some 'alone time' where you can sit down and think about the foods in your current diet that may be presenting obstacles when it comes to weight loss. How can you manage these foods so that your daily diet will be doable so you will achieve weight loss success, as well as a healthier body? Some examples may include:

Weight Loss Obstacle

Solution

Cheeseburger

Order or make the SMALL cheeseburger instead.

Hot Buttered Movie Popcorn

Enjoy Orville Redenbacker's Gourmet Popping Corn in the light, buttery version instead.

Sodas, Sugar-based

Enjoy 1 soda per day rather than 2,3,4,5,6 or 7.

Pancakes & Syrup

Enjoy pancakes topped with either sugar-free syrup OR fresh strawberries & a dollop of light whipped topping instead.

Strawberry Malt

Enjoy the following prepared with a blender: 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries + 1 cup of skim milk.

Giant Candy Bar

Regular candy bar.

Chips from the Bag

Instead of eating from the bag, count out the number of chips that equal a serving and enjoy them by munching on them slowly. Chips, nuts, ice cream - or any food/beverage in containers which hold more than one serving should be removed before enjoying to avoid overeating.

Ice Cream

Try light versions of your favorite flavor, including frozen yogurt. OR, enjoy a bar of ice cream to keep calories under control.

Chocolate

Reach for the dark chocolate to receive the most health benefits. Measure out a single serving and savor slowly.

Peanut Butter

Opt for the whipped varieties and save 1/3rd the calories without missing one inch of flavor. Most versions of peanut butter contain about 200 calories per serving while whipped contains about 140 calories for the same-size serving.

French Fries, Large Order

Whether it's fried fries, fried onion rings, fried mushrooms or fried cheese - if you're going to indulge, do such on the small serving.

Restaurant Dining

From Mexican to Italian dining, sharing an entree with a friend or loved one is a great way to trim calories. Most restaurants serve very large portions as is and odds are, you'll feel totally full and satisfied with 1/2 an entree. If not, you can always order more.
