Baking bread takes a bit of elbow grease - therefore it's a great way to spend calories. And the next time you get really angry and frustrated, try working out that frustration by kneading a loaf of bread. At least when you've simmered, you'll have something worthy of your efforts.

Our tips for keeping bread calories low - as well as how to insert more nutrition into your loaf are:

Watch out for that little yellow difference - Butter & Margarine. Try using half of what you'd ordinarily use OR opt for lighter versions. Our favorite is the zero calorie butter spray by Parkay.

Bread - as bread goes, is basically small in calories, but of course the brand of bread and the size of the slice of bread influences the Calorie Factor. It's what goes on top of bread that can be Diet Deadly.

Peanut butter, margarine, butter, jams, preserves, cheese and cream cheese are just a few of the high-calorie additions that can blow bread right out of the basket. Therefore - choose wisely when adding a topping to your bread.

When baking bread in loaves, use a serrated knife to cut thin slices which will keep calories low. To calculate the calorie content in a loaf of bread, simply add up the calories in the list of ingredients used and divide that number by the servings produced.

Cooking bread in muffin tins helps keep calories in check. One is more apt to eat one with loaves - it's really easy to 'slice 'n go'.

To spike your bread recipe with nutrition, add any of the following to the inside or outside: oatmeal, PLAIN mashed potatoes (minus butter, cream and so forth), poppy seeds, sesame seeds, hulled sunflower seeds, hulled pumpkin seeds, herbs.
