Sugar Substitutes & Other Weight Loss Helpers

It goes without saying that foods that are labeled as lite, light, low fat, sugar free, low sodium, reduced calorie and so forth are foods that can assist you in dropping pounds.

However, there are some individuals who would rather take a dive in a tub of ice rather than drink a diet soda, much less add a teaspoon of ‘fake’ sugar to their daily diet.

Other concerns abound. Are sugar substitutes safe? What are the long term and short term health effects, if any?

If you have these concerns it's important to keep things real (in more ways than one!). Without jumping into the controversy surrounding sugar substitutes - which will most assuredly render zero positive benefits by doing such, let's concentrate on the 'real' issue. According to the USDA:

1 teaspoon of granulated sugar contains 16 calories.
1 cup of granulated sugar contains 776 calories.
1 sugar cube contains 37 calories.
1 serving packet of granulated sugar contains 11 calories.
1 teaspoon of packed brown sugar contains 17 calories.
1 teaspoon of loose brown sugar contains 12 calories.
1 cup of packed brown sugar contains 836 calories.
1 cup of loosely packed brown sugar contains 551 calories.
1 teaspoon of powdered    sugar contains 10 calories.
1 tablespoon of unsifted powdered  sugar contains 31 calories.
1 cup of sifted powdered  sugar contains 389  calories.
1 cup of unsifted powdered  sugar contains 467  calories.

Give the above information, adding a teaspoon of these varieties of sugar isn't going to shoot your weight loss plan in the foot. Adding a cup can.

As to other super weight loss helpers such as those labeled 'lite, light, reduced calorie, low calorie and reduced fat' - all can work hand in hand with your diet. And when they just won't do - be sure to account for the calories that will do.
