Weight Loss Plan Index

What is a Serving Size? Serving sizes can be so confusing. Take Layla.... Layla woke up, anxious to begin the new day - the first day of her new weight loss plan. What better way to start the day than with a bowl of whole grain cereal? Layla sees that one serving equals 1 cup of cereal so she puts that into her bowl lined with happy penguins. Next, she grabs the milk. The label says that one serving equals 1 cup - so she pours that into her cereal. Next, she decides to add a banana to the cereal - so she peels and slices one into her bowl of healthy cereal - thinking that 1 serving of banana is simply 1 banana. Next, she adds the recommended slice of whole grain toast to her breakfast - and just a tab of butter. And finally, she grabs the orange juice and after viewing the label, she enjoys 1 cup as directed. Layla then heads out the door feeling that she has done very well in embracing a healthy breakfast. Okay - let's try to tackle Layla's morning by addressing one issue at a time. 1. Even though Layla enjoyed ultra healthy foods for breakfast - her calorie intake exceeded 600 calories. Here is the calorie breakdown which in turn is breaking down Layla's weight loss plan:
Layla could have adjusted her milk calories by opting for skim milk, thus saving 80 calories - but a 500 calorie breakfast isn't going to do much good towards kissing those unwanted pounds good bye. 2. Although nutrition labels are intended to make our lives healthier as well as assist us with our calorie needs - they are confusing. If only the USDA would require manufacturers to list as best as they can the food group in which the product resides. Take milk. Adding: 1 cup of milk equals one serving from the Dairy Group. How easy is that - particularly for the most basic of foods? Currently, most of us are grabbing boxes, bags and cartons and although we take great care in consuming the recommended serving, it's difficult to place the foods that we eat into their applicable Food Groups. 3. Layla also appears to be under the impression that as long as she enjoys only one serving as recommended - then she can enjoy as many healthy foods as she likes. Unfortunately, this is an unhealthy misconception which can lead to an over-consumption of calories. However, it's very easy to understand why Layla has this train of thought. As to serving sizes, the links below contain those amounts. To bypass this information and go to the next section of The Shape of Things to Come, click here.
