Weight Factors for Individuals Over 70

If you are currently approaching the age of seventy - or if you are older and have too much body fat, losing a few pounds and coming more in-line with your recommended weight may increase your longevity factor.

Extra Pounds May Not Equal Unhealthy Weight

However, keep in mind that being a few pounds over isn't likely to vastly impact life span. In fact, a few health studies have shown that older individuals who are 10 pounds over their recommended body size tend to be healthier.

This isn't to say that you should gain an overage if you are at a current healthy size - but it is to say that you should stress out over a few extra pounds.

Age Naturally Adds Pounds

If we look at the celebrities that we've known on the big-screen over the years, we can see that life has a way of naturally plumping us out. Those who held a thin or normal pounds in their younger years almost-always put on a few after reaching their late middle age years of life.

Because many celebrities who have been substantially overweight have lived into their 90's, this gives us the common sense to know that our genes and heredity are the largest indicators which determine our life span.

The beloved Bob Hope put on a few pounds in his older years and lived to the ripe age of 100. George Burns was an avid cigar smoker yet lived to 100. Leon Askin who played General Burkhalter on Hogan's Heroes and who was significantly overweight lived to be 95. Mae West who grew plump in her ageing years lived way into her 80's.

These wonderful individuals are just a handful of examples which show us that length of life has much more to do with other things than solely the number we see on our bathroom scales.

The Gene Factor, Heredity's Role in Age & Body Weight

But sure - there are things that we can do, things that we can adjust which can assist the gene factor, which in turn can increase our time on earth. Even as we grow old we can keep active. We might not be skydiving - although former President George H.W. Bush did exactly that into his 80's.

Active Mind, State of Happiness Impact Health

In addition, it's just as important to keep our brain active as it is to keep the body active. Doing math problems, working crossword puzzles or even assisting the grandkids with homework are all things that can serve to sharpen our minds - and to keep them sharp.

Perhaps most importantly at this age is our state of happiness. People who have been severely ill throughout history have often overcome their illness or disease simply by introducing happiness into their lives.

Ideal Weight for 70 Years & Older

As to the ideal body weight for the 70-plus year old individual - a personal doctor is the best go-to. Our data chart can be useful in setting health goals - but as we're all so different in body composition, only our doctor can recommend our perfect number.
